Materials

You put your tools through punishing work.

Tungsten ToolWorks understands that, for any tool, the material used is the very first significant characteristic. That's why we've consistently innovated new powder and grade combinations for demanding applications.

We are able to guarantee that our customers receive precision-tolerance tools ground from the the purest, finest grades tailored specifically for your application: Ultra-Grain® or Ultra-Carb®.

Both cemented carbide grades were developed to meet the exacting demands placed on solid carbide tooling by modern technology. These true sub-micron grain-size tungsten carbide alloys feature:

  • Hardness of 92.7 HRA or greater
  • Transverse rupture strength of ≥ 623,000 psi
  • Controlled grain sizes of ≤ 0.8 mm
Both grades offer a combination of strength and toughness unequalled by any other manufacturer, designed for an exceptionally wide range of applications, particularly where toughness and sharp edge profiles are needed. In addition, a special additive maximizes corrosion resistance without loss of toughness.

This photograph of Ultra-Grain demonstrates the complexity of the compound we commonly refer to as Cemented Carbide. Taken at magnification of 10,000 X through an SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), the visible grains are tungsten while the cobalt binder appears as dark shadows. The largest tungsten grains appearing are less than 0.8 micron in size. Tungsten ToolWorks offers the best order-to-order consistency in carbide grain structure.
